It’s that time of the year again. That time where we neatly wrap up our winter woes and step into a breezy resort lounge – one where newer trends are explored and newer dreams created for our wardrobes. This year too, Lakme Fashion Week made sure that creativity was never shortchanged and so we have eight new trends to make sure your style quotient stays a notch higher – always!
Prints Galore: Graphic prints, crazy prints, funky prints and ethnic block prints – you name it, and its all part of the big game to make sure your wardrobe gets its daily dose of awesome. From Naeem Khan’s striped extravaganza to Arti Vijay Gupta’s globe graphics – there are fewer things that command attention than these bold ideas. If you’re the boho babe, don’t miss out on the floral jackets on Garo. Remember…the funkier the print, the better the style!

Sleek & Straight: We all know that every working woman needs her figure-fitted ideas and that’s exactly why sleek works wonders for any body type. Think cropped pants, collared shirts, fitted jackets and pencil skirts and you’re all raring to go and conquer that boardroom. Take inspiration from Sailex whose cropped top plus pencil skirt can make quite a statement – only make sure you pair a cute little jacket with it. Nishka Lulla’s cropped pants and matching shirt combo along with the well-fitted straight pants, white shirt and jacket routine by Nupur Kanoi will work for any working day!

Hippie Chic: Aviators with tinted glasses and bandanas – yes, we’re talking all hippie and this season, the adventurous trend got an all-crazy makeover. From simple kurtas in ethnic block prints combined with Kantha work a la Asmita Marwa to tie & dye sheer jackets worn on simple salwars by Krishna Mehta – boho took the simpler route this year. Brownie points for those going bolder – take cues from Pia Pauro’s matsya maxi dress and you’re set for the summer!

Summer Pastels: Resort/Summer is never complete without those cute little pastel additions. From crop tops to work jackets, from georgette saris to assymetrical dresses – everything goes the softer route and looks pleasing to the eyes. If you’re the experimental kinds, go for the lazy sea green monotone jacket and pants routine from the label Huemn. Manish Malhotra went all out this season with latent pinks and easy breezy blues to create saris that made your evenings glamorous while Archana Kocchar plays it bold with monochromes teamed with a tint of pastel.

Essential Whites: Nothing beats a balmy day than a pair of white essentials in your already crowded wardrobe. Elegant, classic and easy on the eyes – any white ensemble can bring out the best of summer here for you. Go easy with your body with a loose asymmetrical knee-length dress from the Daniel Syiem collection or add in a little colour with block prints or floral emblems like we saw on the catwalks of Purva Doshi. Soumitra Mondal makes it perfect with a white salwar-kurta teamed up with red embroidery and bold makeup and floral hairbands to match. Whoever said white is boring didn’t read this season’s style manual.

Holiday Sheers: With sheers in tow over nad on every outfit, can summer be far behind? Yes, sheers give us the inate ability to spew some much-needed poetry. But truth be told, summer and sheers are the season’s biggest couple – from sheer skirts on jewel-toned kurtas from Karishma Shahani’s collection to brightly-embroidered sheer wrap-ons and jackets worn with funky printed shifts from the House of Masaba – the transparent trend is here to stay and grab all the eyeballs. If you’re into experimental style – opt for a sheer shirt with a fun inner or a cropped top snuggled inside a bright-coloured sheer addition.

Babes & Brights: While subtle is here to stay, can bright be excused? Of course, not! Bright oranges, yellows and fuchsias coloured the runways this season with ombre additions, bold embroidery and extreme colour-blocking. Simplicity and bright colours go very well with Shivan Narresh’s newest colour-block saris while Anushka Khanna’s ombre wraps are the first word in beach style. Swapnil Shinde’s bright pink jumpsuits are easy on the body and go very well for a casual day out as well as a serious workday.

Textile Goddess: Nothing beats a warm day than some great Indian fashion. Yes, we’re talking textiles and beautiful fabric – add interesting silhouettes and summer layering and you’re all set for the season. Take for example, the cotton and sheer asymmetrical dress by Vaishali S which epitomizes elegance and creativity with beautiful embroidery to match, boho cannot get better than this. Gaurav Jai Gupta’s summer layering also works wonders for the realistic summer-lover – that can only mean shift dresses and fun cover-ups and wraps to make them look formal. Shruti Sancheti takes it a notch higher with checkered wraps, pretty laid-back scarves and textile-heavy maxi dresses.
